How Can I Claim God's Promises in my Life?

CONVERSATIONS:

From the video, we learned how we are to claim God's promises in our lives. But why is it important to do so?

You see, the moment we invite Christ to be the Lord and Savior of our lives, change is expected to happen in us. We are already a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17), but the change that happens in us encompasses our whole lives as we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us through the power of God's word at work in our lives. In other words, for change to happen in us, we cannot do so apart from the transforming power of the word of God.

What is the power of knowing God's word by heart and standing on it?

As we increasingly anchor ourselves on God's word each day, we His children learn to put off the old self, and put on the new self, becoming more like Jesus each day, fruitful and useful in God's Kingdom. Taking God at His word builds our faith in Him. Standing on His truth and promises frees us from being conformed to this world, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds ( Rom. 12:2) as we learn to "take every thought captive to obey Christ" (2 Cor. 10:5). Psalm 1 also demonstrates how being planted in God's word is key to our fruitfulness. A stronger faith, change towards Christ-likeness, and fruitfulness can only happen if we anchor ourselves on God's truth and let it transform us. This is why it is important to remember God's word, resist settling on where we are, and receive God's promises.

What are some promises of God that you have claimed and have been standing on since you began a relationship with Him? Write one or two that have changed your life significantly in the space below.

Are you regularly studying God's word? If you have yet to find out the promises of God, begin the habit of studying a passage of Scripture each day. Studying whole books of the Bible, a passage per day (you can do it a portion of a chapter, a chapter or chapters each day) over a period of time until you finish the book is preferable so you can see the context in which a verse and idea is situated.

From the passage you studied that day, choose a verse that captures the main idea and commit it to memory. Write it down in your journal. Meditate on it throughout the day.

Learn how to stand on and claim the truth of Scripture, not just within that day, but cumulatively, as the days go. This way, you can retain, meditate and learn to stand on the truths, the principles and the promises that God presents in His word in increasing measure.

Begin the practice of studying God's word and committing verses to memory this week until it becomes a habit. Write down a promise or truth from God's word that you are committing to memory from your quiet time today. Try to write it from memory!

What does this truth or promise mean to you? How does it challenge what you know, understand, believe or do?

________________________________________________________ At the end of this week, review the truths and promises you have learned from God's word during the week and see how you have appropriated these truths in your life. See how much your heart's storehouse of God's truths and promises has increased in size, and watch how standing on God's word, one truth and promise at a time, transforms your life!

Let's pray:

Thank You, Father, for Your holy word, that enables me to know You, Your heart, and Your promises. As I study Scripture this week, help me learn to anchor myself on the truth of Your word and stand on Your promises. Establish me in Your truth; transform me and make me fruitful and useful in Your kingdom as I do so. As I delight in Your word and meditate on it, even now I look forward to becoming "like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither," as You promise in Psalm 1:2-3. In Jesus name. Amen.

My Comments Policy

While my site offers visitors the ability to converse, I have a few ground rules so that our conversations will remain civil and courteous.

1. You must register in order to leave a comment. I don’t entertain pseudo, anonymous or bogus individuals. This site is my home (it has a Home Page, get it). I don’t let strangers who don’t introduce themselves into my home.

2. I love questions. I love them because a lot of times they are similar to someone else’s questions and can even trigger other questions from others. Questions also keep us all sharp. This is also why I respond to them as best as I can and at the soonest possible time. I believe that group answering benefits more people than private email exchanges.

3. We don’t have to agree. Debates are welcome. However, whether it is with me or any other visitors of my site, my rule is this: disagree if you must but keep things civil. That’s just how I run my home, and you are a visitor here. No shouting; I have seen it done in writing. No cursing and no insulting.

4. I reserve the right to delete your comments. Like I said, this is my home. I do not have an obligation to publish your comments. As a human being, you may enjoy the freedom to express your opinions on your own site but not on mine. To be specific, I will delete your comments if you post content that is in my sole opinion: (a) snarky; (b) off-topic; (c) libelous, defamatory, abusive, harassing, threatening, profane, pornographic, offensive, false, misleading, or which otherwise violates or encourages others to violate my sense of decorum, civility or any law, including intellectual property laws; or (d) “spam,” i.e. an attempt to advertise, solicit, or otherwise promote goods and services. You may, however, post a link to your site or your most recent blog entry.

5. You retain ownership of your comments. I do not own them and I expressly disclaim any and all liability that may result from them. By commenting on my site, you agree that you retain all ownership rights in what you post here and that you will relieve me from any and all liability that may result from those posts.

6. You grant me the license to post your comments. This license is worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, and royalty-free. By posting comments on my site, you automatically grant me the right to store, use, transmit, display, publish, reproduce, and distribute your comments in any format, including but not limited to a blog, in a book, video, or presentation.

In short, my goal is to host interesting conversations with caring, honest, and respectful people. I believe this clear and simple comments policy will facilitate this.
